The Counter-Offer
While counter-offers may be tempting and even flattering, there can be pitfalls that you need to be aware of. Ask yourself these questions:
- Will your loyalty always be in question?
- If there are future cutbacks, will you be the first to go because of concerns about your loyalty?
- If you accept the counter-offer for more money, are you just giving your employer the time they need to locate and select your replacement?
- With a salary rise or a bonus being offered, how do you see your chances of receiving such incentives in the years to come? Are you just getting an early pay rise?
- If you are now being offered a promotion, why did you have to give your notice in before this promotion was mentioned to you?
- Will your career track remain blocked if you accept the counter offer?
- Will you really get more responsibility?
- Will you have to report to a person you respect?
- Is the counter-offer a ploy to avoid a short-term inconvenience by your employer? Whose best interests does your Manager have at heart – yours or theirs?
As attractive and complimentary as counter-offers may appear, they can greatly decrease your chances of achieving your career potential.
